Magazine ads, on average, cost anywhere from $500 to $20,000; although they can cost as much as $500,000 depending on the type of publication. The only place it's cheaper to advertise is usually radio. That doesn't mean it's the best place to advertise, though.
Radio and television ads interrupt the content. In a way, they're intrusive. People are skipping over ads on televisions with media recording devices and radio viewership has been declining. Newspaper ads are expensive, plus, they're not as effective as radio and television.

After all, they're being placed on a company's business brand, and anything that upsets their audience might cause them to lose money—even if you're the one paying them for the spot.
Billboards can go just about anywhere, and, as long as you're not overly offending anyone, you can be about as creative as you want. The same goes for business signs, which you're usually posting on your property anyway.
